Let's compare Rockwool and fiberglass the way I compare any two line items on a bid: sticker price, total cost, callbacks, and what the client actually hears after the drywall goes up. I'm the procurement manager at a 12-person building company. I've logged every insulation order in our cost tracking system for six years, and that system has changed how I buy.
I'll say this up front: Rockwool is not the right choice for every wall, and fiberglass is not automatically a bad one. But if you're here because you typed 2x8 rockwool insulation into a search bar, stop treating it like a product name. A 2x8 wall has a 7.25-inch-deep stud cavity. The batt has to actually fit that depth. That one detail causes a lot of ordering mistakes.

We're comparing mineral wool batts from Rockwool against standard fiberglass batts in the same wall assembly: 2x8 wood studs at 16 inches on center, drywall both sides, and an eight-foot ceiling. I care about four things: material price, total cost after installation, sound control, and fire performance. I also care about how people measure the cavities, because the best material in the world won't help if the order is wrong.
Here's the thing: once the wall is closed, nobody sees either product. They feel the temperature, they hear the noise, and they eventually see the energy bill. Insulation is one of the few purchases where the cheap version and the expensive version are equally invisible. That makes it easy to under-buy.
Price of Rockwool vs fiberglass: the number on the shelf
The price of Rockwool is higher. I won't pretend otherwise. From supplier quotes we collected in January 2025, Rockwool for a 2x8 wall landed somewhere around $1.80 to $2.10 per square foot at retail. A comparable fiberglass batt was about $0.80 to $1.10 per square foot. I want to say the last order hit $1.85, but don't quote me on that; insulation pricing moves with freight and fuel.
If you only compare those two numbers, the spreadsheet wants fiberglass. But the spreadsheet has other rows. When I first started managing insulation purchases, I assumed the cheaper batt was always the better decision. That was wrong. Or rather, it was right until the first callback. We had a wall between a garage and a home office. The cheap batt left gaps along the top plate, and the homeowner could hear their LiftMaster garage door opener every time it ran. The rework cost more than the difference between the two insulation products. If I remember correctly, the repair was about six times the savings we made on material.
I'm not saying fiberglass causes callbacks. I'm saying the total cost of a cheap batt includes installation errors, sagging, and gaps. Rockwool is denser and stiffer. It stays where you set it. It can be slightly more work to cut around an outlet box, but our crew stopped losing time when they stopped fighting a batt that slid around. Not ideal if you're in a hurry, but workable. Usually more workable than a rework.
Thermal performance: the part I used to get wrong
Here's an uncomfortable conclusion: in a 2x8 wall, Rockwool's R-value advantage is not the reason to buy it. Rockwool is roughly R-4 per inch, while standard fiberglass batts are typically R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch. That matters in a skinny 2x4 wall. But a 2x8 cavity gives you more depth than either product needs to hit the usual code targets. Both can get you to roughly the same R-value if you buy the right batt thickness.
What matters more is whether the batt fills the cavity. A fiberglass batt that gets pinched, compressed, or cut poorly leaves voids. Rockwool is more forgiving because it's denser and doesn't sag. That is an installation benefit, not a lab number.
Sound: Dutch doors, garage door openers, and shared walls
This is the dimension that changes my recommendation. Last year we did a renovation where a client had a Dutch door off the mudroom. The mudroom shared a 2x8 wall with the garage, and the office above the garage had a constant low-hum problem. The noise came through the wall assembly, not just the door. The homeowner didn't need the Dutch door rebuilt; they needed the wall to stop passing airborne sound.
We switched that section from fiberglass to Rockwool, sealed the top plate, and added acoustic caulk around the door frame. The difference wasn't night and day. It was more like, the motor still hums but it doesn't sit in your chest. That sounds small, but it's the difference between a complaint and a referral.
Honestly, I'm not sure why the acoustics improved more than the R-value math suggested. My best guess is that Rockwool's higher density absorbs mid-frequency sound better than loose fiberglass. If the noise problem involves a garage door opener, don't rely on insulation alone. A LiftMaster opener mounted on the same studs as a finished room will vibrate the structure. Use a vibration isolator or resilient channel for the mechanical connection; batt insulation handles the airborne part.
Fire: better on paper, not always the deciding factor
Rockwool is stone wool. It doesn't support combustion, and it holds up at higher temperatures than fiberglass. That's a real difference. In a single-family wood-framed wall, though, the fire rating usually comes from the drywall, the framing, and proper detailing, not from the batt. If you're choosing Rockwool for a 2x8 exterior wall, I'd call it a bonus, not the main event.
Where Rockwool's fire performance is more meaningful: attached garages, exposed basements with open ceilings, steel stud commercial walls, and any assembly where the insulation itself has to stand up to heat. In a regular 2x8 house wall, you're probably paying for sound and stability more than fire protection.
One caveat on all of this: Rockwool is water repellent, not waterproof. A torn pallet wrap and a puddle among bundles taught us that. The wet Rockwool didn't recover. Keep any batt dry until it's behind drywall.
How to read a tape measure before you order
The biggest ordering mistake I've logged isn't choosing the wrong brand. It's reading the tape measure wrong. A 2x8 wall cavity isn't two by eight inches. The stud is 1.5 by 7.25 inches. A 16-inch on-center layout gives you 14.5 inches between the faces of the studs, not 16. A 24-inch layout gives you 22.5 inches. Rockwool batts are designed with a slight oversize, a 15-inch or 23-inch width, so they squeeze into the cavity and stay put.
So measure from the inside face of one stud to the inside face of the next. Practice on the fractions. The distance between 14 and 15 isn't somewhere around 14. It might be 14-1/4, 14-1/2, or 14-3/4, and that half-inch changes whether the batt fits tightly or leaves a gap.
Measure each wall in a few spots. Foundations settle, framers make mistakes, and a cavity that's 7-1/2 inches deep on one side can be 7-1/4 on the other. If you have a Dutch door, measure the rough opening, not the door slab, and treat the header as its own rectangle. Same with wall height: two 47-inch batts are slightly longer than the usual eight-foot stud cavity, which is fine. The top course gets lightly compressed. But you need to know that before you order.
If you're standing at the building supply counter asking for 2x8 rockwool insulation, the correct follow-up is: what's the cavity depth? If it's 7.25 inches, you want the deep batt. Don't double up 3.5-inch batts out of habit; the material and labor cost almost never beat the correct batt.
What I would buy
Procurement answer: it depends on where the wall is. Use Rockwool for walls that separate bedrooms from garages, offices from mechanical rooms, or any wall where a client will judge how quiet the house feels. Use fiberglass for interior partitions where sound doesn't matter and for exterior walls that are straightforward, code-minimum work. The price of Rockwool is worth it when a callback is expensive. It's not worth it when nobody will ever notice.
I still buy fiberglass for pantry walls, closet walls, and rooms above garages where we've added isolation at the framing level. I buy Rockwool for the walls where an insulation complaint would be a project-level problem.
I also buy from the same supplier I've worked with for years, even when a one-time quote is 3% cheaper somewhere else. The vendor knows our schedule, picks up the phone, and replaces a damaged bundle without a fight. In the long run, that relationship saves more than the lowest quoted price.
In our trade, the quality of the hidden stuff is what people remember when they stand in a quiet house. They don't remember the list price of the batt. They remember that the place felt right. That's why I'll spend the extra dollar on the walls that matter.
