Those differences cost real money. They also show up in ways that don't appear on a product data sheet.

1. Installing Rockwool in Ceiling Cavities Is a Different Physical Job
Installation is the dimension I watch first, because a ceiling is often an awkward space. If you're working under a sloped roof or between floor joists, gravity is not on your side.
Rockwool R38 batts are stiff. That stiffness sounds like a minor detail until you've fought a floppy batt that keeps sliding out of position above your head. Rockwool presses into the cavity and stays put. That's the main reason project managers ask for it on vaulted and cathedral ceilings.
Fiberglass is different, but not in a bad way. It's light and fast to lay into a straightforward attic. Our crews can cover a flat ceiling area quicker with fiberglass than with stone wool. It's also easier to compress around wires and obstructions, which is useful in a complicated ceiling plane.
The honest catch is that Rockwool is heavy. Several dense batts in a row makes for a tiring afternoon. This feels like fine print until an engineer flags it. When that happens, you're not just swapping insulation—you're re-reviewing the whole assembly. That creates delays. Acoustics is a separate issue. Rockwool's density gives it an edge in sound absorption, especially at lower frequencies. If you're choosing between Rockwool and fiberglass for a ceiling, the moisture discussion should focus on how the cavity is detailed. Does it have an air barrier? Is there proper ventilation above a cathedral ceiling? Where will accidental water go? Those questions matter more than the insulation brand.
Fiberglass can trap water and lose R-value when wet. Rockwool can survive water exposure better if it has a chance to dry, but it's not an excuse to leave water problems unresolved. I still require deliveries to be stored off the ground and under cover. I still schedule dry-in before insulation, not after.
