Short Answer: Safe'n'Sound Is R-15
ROCKWOOL Safe'n'Sound is rated R-15 in a typical 2x4 wall cavity. That is the published spec on ROCKWOOL's data sheet as of March 2025. If you only need the number, there it is.
But the longer answer is where I earn my keep. That same R-15 number also shows up on a different Rockwool batt called Comfortbatt. And confusing those two products is one of the most common insulation mistakes I see.
Why the R-Value Question Is Not a Product Spec

Read that table again. At the same cavity thickness, both products can be R-15. If you write Rockwool R-15 on a purchase order, the warehouse might send you the interior sound batt when you actually need the exterior thermal batt. The number on the label won't catch the problem.
R-value tells you how well a material resists heat flow in a standardized test. It doesn't tell you whether the product was designed for the job. That's why I always ask contractors to put the product line on the order, not just the R-value.
Rockwool on Exterior Walls: What I Actually Check
If you came here searching for Rockwool on exterior walls, here's the decision path I use when reviewing a submittal:
- 2x4 exterior wall cavity: Comfortbatt in the R-15 range is typically the right fit. It matches the cavity depth and the exterior wall intent.
- 2x6 exterior wall cavity: I expect Comfortbatt R-23. A 5.5-inch cavity should not have a thinner R-15 batt floating in it with an air gap behind it.
- Continuous exterior insulation: That's a different Rockwool product family: rigid mineral wool board like Comfortboard 80, which runs about R-4.2 per inch. It's not a batt at all.
Where does Safe'n'Sound fit in an exterior wall? Honestly, I would leave it for interior partitions. It can be placed in an exterior assembly in some cases, but it was not designed to be the thermal layer for the building envelope. When the drawing says exterior wall mineral wool, I want to see the product that ROCKWOOL documents as exterior wall insulation—Comfortbatt.

- If you're adding continuous insulation outside the sheathing, use a rigid mineral wool board like Comfortboard 80. That's a separate spec from the cavity batt.
That said, I can only speak to typical North American wood-frame construction. If you're working with a commercial steel stud assembly or a project outside the U.S. and Canada, verify the product line with the local ROCKWOOL spec sheet. The R-value question is universal, but product sizing and code requirements are not.
Bottom line: Safe'n'Sound is R-15. But an exterior wall is not an R-value chart. The extra minute it takes to write Comfortbatt, exterior wall, 2x6, R-23 instead of just Rockwool R-15 is what changes a probably fine project into a confidently correct one.
