Soundproofing: The Bathroom Test

A 52 STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating with a standard double-layer 5/8” drywall assembly. With fiberglass batts, the same assembly tested at an STC of 45.   • 2x6 rockwool R-value: R-23 (vs. R-21 for fiberglass in the same cavity). Slightly better thermal performance, but the real edge is fire and sound.

Is it worth the premium? In my opinion, yes—100%. The marginal cost of upgrading is dwarfed by the potential liability from a fire or mold issue. The Edge Cases: When I Might Not Use Rockwool

It’s tempting to say “rockwool is always better.” But that ignores nuance. Here are situations where I’ve hesitated:

  • Extreme budget constraints: If the client absolutely can’t afford the premium, I’ll spec R-21 fiberglass and emphasize proper vapor barrier and vent fan use.
  • Unvented roof applications: Rockwool can trap moisture in certain sealed assemblies. I’d choose a vapor-open insulation like mineral wool board or spray foam with proper ventilation design.
  • Rush orders with supply issues: In early 2024, during a regional supply chain hiccup, I couldn’t get rockwool batts for a 36-hour turnaround. I substituted with high-density fiberglass (R-21) and installed a fire-rated caulk around penetrations. Not ideal, but serviceable.

Yeah, I’d rather have rockwool. But a good installer with the right details matters more than the insulation material alone. I’ve seen spray foam installed poorly that caused rot. I’ve seen fiberglass installed carefully that performed fine.

What’s the Bottom Line?

For a bathroom—where moisture, fire risk from nearby fixtures, and sound privacy all converge—rockwool mineral wool delivers the best balance of performance and safety at a reasonable cost. I recommend it for any bathroom remodel or new build where the budget allows a $50–70 upgrade.

The question isn’t “is rockwool worth it?” for a bathroom. The question is “can you afford not to use it?” When I’m triaging a rush order and someone says “just use fiberglass, it’s fine,” I push back. Not because I’m trying to upsell, but because I’ve seen the alternative fail.
