It was a Tuesday in August when I first met the Rockwool RWA45 data sheet. A contractor put it in my hand and said, “You'll need this for the office wall.” I stared at it the way I stare at my car's engine light: not exactly fear, just a deep and total lack of understanding.
I'm the office administrator here. I manage roughly 60–80 orders a year across eight or so vendors. I buy chairs, coffee, cleaning supplies, and occasionally get volunteered for something bigger. That August, the something bigger was an acoustic partition between our sales development team and the QA team.
Here's the background. In our 2024 reorganization, someone put a phone-heavy sales group right next to a “please be quiet” QA group. Within two weeks, complaints were everywhere. I put a sound level meter on the shared wall and read 68–75 dB during peak hours. Management approved a budget for acoustic treatment and handed me the project. That's how a contractor came to hand me a product data sheet with the words “RWA45” on top.
I knew Rockwool was a mineral wool brand. I did not know what made one rockwool product different from another. So I asked the same question I ask every supplier: “Is this the right product for the job?”
He answered with data. “RWA45 is a 45 kg/m³ stone wool board. It's non-combustible, Euroclass A1. Thermal conductivity 0.035 W/m·K. NRC up to near 1.0 in the right assembly. There's the data sheet.”
I nodded. I wrote down what he said. Then I went back to my desk and googled half of it.
The wrong board was 30% cheaper
A competing supplier called me with a price about 30% below the Rockwool quote. On my spreadsheet, that looked excellent. The board had a reasonable R-value and the same thickness. I almost approved it without reading its data sheet.
Then the contractor saw the materials list. “This board won't pass fire inspection for this partition,” he said. “It's A2-s1,d0 at best. You need A1. There's a difference, and the inspector will know it.”
So I opened the Rockwool RWA45 data sheet again, this time slowly, and fought my way through the tables.
What the RWA45 data sheet tells you
The rockwool RWA45 data sheet is free on Rockwool's website. For anyone who's too embarrassed to ask what a Euroclass is, here's the short version:
- Density: 45 kg/m³. The “45” in the name.
- Reaction to fire: Euroclass A1. Non-combustible. This is the highest rating in the European classification system.
- Thermal conductivity: 0.035 W/m·K at 10°C. Lower is better.
- Sound absorption: NRC values from about 0.85 up to near 1.0 depending on thickness, cavity, and mounting.
When people search “rockwool insulation rating,” they usually mean the R-value. That's only one part. A commercial partition needs three conversations: thermal, fire, and sound. The data sheet covers all three. If a manufacturer can't show you a data sheet with all three, that's your sign to keep shopping.
The cheaper board had decent thermal numbers. It just couldn't match the fire rating or the acoustic performance. And when we priced the extra layers of fire-rated drywall needed to make the assembly safe, the savings were gone. The “cheaper” option would have ended up costing more and still wouldn't have been as good.

Then the supplier test arrived
We placed the order. Then, a week before installation, our contact at the Rockwool distributor quit. No handover. My order status changed to “Pending review,” and no one could tell us why.
I should have asked for written confirmation from his manager. But I thought, “It's been in the system for a week. What are the odds anything goes wrong?” The odds were pretty good, apparently. A 3-day delivery slip turned into 10 days. The construction crew sat idle. One of the office assistants, watching the shipping status sit unchanged, asked out loud how much door dashers make. “Why?” “Because we're about to wait as long as a late DoorDash order, and they at least get paid for it.” She wasn't wrong.
Our VP asked me why the project was behind schedule. I told them the truth: I skipped a verification step because I assumed the process would work. That mistake wasn't on the data sheet. It was on me. I haven't repeated it.
Three details I wish someone had told me first
If you're a fellow non-engineer dealing with something like this, here are three things to keep in mind:
1. The wall is only as good as its door. The partition around the new acoustic assembly was a fire-rated construction, which meant the door, hinges, and door handle had to match the rating. We caught it before ordering the standard interior door, but only because the contractor had seen it go wrong before.
2. “Fiber” has two very different meanings. When I told a coworker we were installing mineral fiber, she asked if it was like the fiber gummies she takes at lunch. “Not exactly,” I said. “This fiber goes in the wall and stops sound. It won't help your digestion.” She thought about it and said the wall was probably healthier.
3. Sustainability claims need evidence. The Rockwool data sheet links to third-party environmental product declarations. That grabbed my attention because broad claims like “green” or “recyclable” need to be substantiated. The FTC Green Guides say about the same thing. If a supplier can't show you the documentation behind their marketing language, that's a red flag, not a slogan.
Was Rockwool worth the premium?
For our project, yes. The RWA45 data sheet gave the inspector exactly what they needed to see. We passed on the first visit. No redesign. No extra material layers. No second round of construction. The quieter room is a huge improvement, and the sales team and QA team are both functioning again.
But I wouldn't claim Rockwool is the right answer for every project. That would be lazy. Different buildings, budgets, and performance targets need different products. What I'll say is this: the data sheet is the most honest sales document you'll get. The price tells you what the product costs. The data sheet tells you what the product is worth.
The belief that “all rock wool is the same” is a leftover from an older era. Fifteen years ago, the range was narrower and the differences were smaller. Today, densities, binders, facings, and acoustic performance vary a lot. RWA45 is not a generic batt. The proof is in the public data sheet.
What I'd tell another office buyer
Don't be afraid of spec sheets. I know they look technical. I also know the feeling of trying to explain a delayed project because you didn't check a number. That feeling is worse.
When a supplier hands you a data sheet, ask for the fire classification, the thermal conductivity, and the acoustic rating. Check the document date. Confirm the manufacturer name is on it. And get the order confirmed in writing before you schedule anyone.
I still buy chairs and coffee. But now I also buy a little more responsibly—and I read the data sheet before I make a call.
That's the difference between choosing a product and just picking one.
