I had no idea what he was talking about.
How I ended up managing a renovation

The upside was a safer, quieter building. The risk was spending money on something I couldn't see. I kept asking myself: is $1,400 worth potentially failing inspection? Or worse, finding rot in a sealed wall in fifteen years?

After five years of managing purchasing, I've come to believe that the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest outcome. The invoice is only the beginning. Installation, inspection, energy bills, insurance, rework—all of those costs follow you long after the purchase order closes.
We also argued about the black front door, the window placement, and the colour of the steel siding. All the visible decisions. The invisible ones—the ones built into the walls—mattered more.
The building has been live for three months. The CFO asked me to manage the office fit-out next year. My first request was that the building consultant be included from day one.
