What is the R-value of Rockwool?
There isn't one number. The R-value printed on the package is the total thermal resistance for that exact thickness. As of Q1 2025 product data sheets, most Rockwool stone wool products are roughly R-3.9 to R-4.3 per inch, depending on product density and the standard used to measure it. For example, a 3.5-inch batt might be R-15 while a thicker batt is R-30. That doesn't mean 'Rockwool is R-30.' It means that particular product and thickness is R-30.
Why does this matter? Because if you spec by R-value, you need the exact thickness and density. If you spec by product name only, you haven't told anyone which Rockwool product you want. Check the current product data sheet before you order.
Where do I get the Rockwool safety data sheet?
Start at ROCKWOOL's official website and search Safety Data Sheets. Use the exact product line, because the SDS for an acoustic board is not the SDS for pipe insulation. If you're a general contractor or subcontractor, get the SDS before delivery. OSHA requires that SDSs be accessible on the jobsite, and it's easier to ask before an order than to scramble when an inspector asks.
I'm not an industrial hygienist, so I won't interpret the SDS for you. My procurement advice is simple: read it, follow the dust and skin precautions, and call the manufacturer if you have a health question.
Is Rockwool worth the extra material cost?
On a straight material-price comparison, Rockwool generally costs more than standard fiberglass. I don't buy on straight material price. I buy on total cost, which includes installation labor, schedule risk, fire-resistance requirements, sound performance, and rework.
In Q2 2024, we quoted a 96-unit apartment package. The fiberglass bid was lower by about $18,000. But the wall required a fire-resistance-rated assembly, and the alternate as specified would have needed a separate engineering review and additional firestopping—roughly $22,000 and two weeks of schedule. The Rockwool option ended up cheaper in total cost. The conventional wisdom that the lowest quote wins falls apart when the total cost says otherwise.
To be fair, the stone wool premium is not always justified. Run the numbers for your specific assembly. If the cheaper material meets every requirement and doesn't add risk, buy it. I'd rather be honest than dogmatic.
Can I use Rockwool around pocket door hardware?
Yes, but don't stuff a wide batt behind the metal pocket. Pocket door hardware takes up cavity space, and compression changes the effective thermal performance and can make the door track hard to close cleanly.
Split the batt to fit around the pocket, or use thinner batts on both faces. On one hotel job, an installer wanted to 'just push it in.' We caught it during the pre-install check. Cut the batt, not the frame.
For an exterior wall with a pocket door, the insulation is the easy part. The air barrier and flashing around the opening need more attention. If a designer asks for a sound-rated wall with a pocket door, include door gasketing and a head seal in the spec.

This question actually appears in search logs, and I understand why. A toddler floor bed sits low, so the child's breathing zone is right next to the wall. For any insulation in a bedroom, the important thing is a complete wall assembly: air-sealed drywall, no exposed insulation, and no gaps around outlets or baseboards.
Rockwool isn't food. I won't tell you it's safe to touch or ingest. If a product has a third-party VOC certification, that helps with indoor air concerns, but the building assembly matters more. Install the drywall, seal the penetrations, and the toddler is sleeping against a wall, not a batt.
Does Rockwool need a vapor barrier?
The answer depends on climate and local building code. In cold heating climates, some assemblies need a vapor retarder on the warm-in-winter side. In many mixed and warm climates, a vapor-permeable assembly works without a plastic sheet.
One thing to be clear about: Rockwool is water-repellent, not waterproof. It won't wick water like a sponge, but it is not a substitute for a weather-resistant barrier, flashing, or drainage plane. If a wall is getting wet, solve the water issue on the outside. Don't hide it behind insulation.
Can I substitute a generic mineral wool product?
In my first year as a buyer, I made a classic generic-spec mistake: I ordered 'mineral wool' without the exact product name. The supplier sent an acoustic board that looked similar, but it didn't have the R-value or fire rating required in the assembly spec. The foreman caught it before install, but we paid a restocking fee, lost two days, and looked like amateurs. (Note to self: never again.)
Spec by product name, R-value, density, and fire classification. Ask for the product data sheet and SDS in the submittal package. If a salesperson says 'it's all the same,' that tells you they haven't read the spec.
The best material on any project is the one that meets the spec, fits the schedule, and doesn't create callbacks. I don't care if it's expensive or popular. I care that it's the right product for the total cost.
